Why is the ‘Game of Thrones’ TV show so awesomely popular?

DragonAccording to Torrent Freak, Game of Thrones  is currently the most pirated  TV show out there.

But as one of the principles, John Bradley,  says,  it’s no game;  it’s a bidnis,  and it’s burgeoning thanks  largely  (if not mainly)  to all the illegal  (read ‘viral’)  downloads  (read ‘viewing’)

That, and the fact  there are many as  near-to-pornographic-as-you can-get scenes  of naked women cavorting (to be delicate)  in a bawdy house owned  by one of the main characters.

Of course,  it’s also a cracking good yarn, as they say, with  plenty of swashing, buckling,  thud and blunder  and  derring-do.

There’s also some pretty amazing  CGI which, “with 4,280,000 downloads for a single episode,” makes it, the  “most pirated TV-show of 2012,”  says TF, going on »»»

Airing delays and HBO’s choice not to make it widely available online are two of the top reasons why so many people pirated the show.

Game of Thrones is particularly popular in Australia, where people have to wait a week longer than fans in the U.S. to view the show. Nevertheless, even in the U.S. hundreds and thousands are downloading the show for free, although many would love to pay for it if HBO offered a standalone HBO GO subscription.

In common with many branches of the entertainment industry, the challenge for TV companies such as HBO is to come up with a business model that allows users to consume what they want at any given time, without losing existing revenue in the process.

When that puzzle is solved worldwide the number of unauthorized downloads will be pretty much insignificant.
