Globe and Mail wins prestigious newspaper award

sunny leoneCanada’s ‘national newspaper’ has won an award for, among other things, a story celebrating Sunny Leone — a  Canadian porn star.

“On Friday night, The Globe and Mail was honoured for these, and for columns on international affairs, at the National Newspaper Awards, considered the industry’s top prize,” it gushes.

“Leone, born and raised in Sarnia, Ont., is one of the biggest stars in the North American adult-entertainment business. She’s been a Penthouse Pet of the Year, starred in high-grossing hits such as Not Charlie’s Angels XXX, has her own line of sex toys and a production company,”  says the story partially responsible  for the award.

“Now Leone is back in the land she calls her ‘birthright,’ seeking a new life of her own – and she’s a whole new kind of famous.”

She was, “the first South Asian star in the North American porn industry, seems to have been a bit of viewer bait chosen by a savvy producer,”  says the  G & M,  adding:

“She tripped around in stilettos, smiling sweetly and speaking broken Hindi.”

Oh yes:

“The winners were as diverse as the tale of a former Canadian adult entertainment star making it big in Bollywood, an account of a power struggle at a railway company, and an image of a tender moment at a palliative-care hospice,”  says the story trumpeting the honour.

“The awards are a tribute to outstanding journalism right across the country and the industry,” editor-in-chief John Stackhouse is quoted as saying. [ ;)]

Leone was born in Sarnia, Ontario to Sikh Punjabi parents.

Her father was born in Tibet and raised in Delhi, while her mother (who died in 2008) was from Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh.

As a young girl, she was very athletic and played street hockey with the boys and ice skating on a nearby frozen lake.

Although the family was Sikh, her parents enrolled her in Catholic school as it was felt to be unsafe for her to go to public school. There she had her first kiss at 11, lost her virginity to a basketball player at another school at 16,and discovered her bisexuality at age 18.

The headline to the story which contributed to the win?

“Why this Canadian porn star’s past isn’t holding her back in Bollywood.”

No need to stay tuned
