Remember way back when Chaos theory was the current ‘ thing’ –– like, when a butterfly flaps its wings in some remote part of the world, the ripple effect escalates until the movement has the potential to affect everything everywhere else?
An entry in the Wikipedia Neatly sums it up like this: “the butterfly effect is the delay particular in which a small change at one place in a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state. The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz derived from the theoretical example of a hurricane’s formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks earlier.”
Intriguing idea and now the Rob Ford I didn’t smoke crack cocaine; Yes, I did but I was pissed out of my mind so it doesn’t matter, scandal has been picked up by newspapers, television stations, radio, blogs and webpages and repeated endlessly around the world. I mean, it doesn’t get any juicier 😉
Just the kind of publicity Toronto needs.
The Economist, possibly Britain’s most influential current affairs magazine, headlines the scandal like this:
After months of denying allegations that he had smoked crack cocaine, Rob Ford, Toronto’s independent mayor since 2010, reversed course on November 5th, admitting that he had taken the drug about a year ago.
His explanation, that it was “probably in one of my drunken stupors”, did little to help his case.
The breathtaking announcement—one of the reporters present literally gasped—was followed by an emotional apology to Torontonians for embarrassing them and a promise not to light up again.
But despite his contrition, Mr Ford made clear that he has no plans to resign. Indeed, he says he will run for re-election next year.
Why should the world care? Because Ford still is, (amazingly) the mayor of Canada’s largest city –– Toronto.
However, according to Patrick Gossage, a former press secretary to prime minister Pierre Trudeau, quoted by the CBC,. “It’s brilliant.”
Nothing but a ploy to garner sympathy and turn a pigs ear into a silk purse? By “…finally stepping up and taking responsibility for his actions, Ford has performed “the final mea culpa?”
Or might it better be described as his Seppuku?
