The tragic story of Luna, the too-friendly killer whale

“In 2004, Michael Parfit and Suzanne Chisholm were assigned to write a magazine feature about a whale displaying an affinity for humans in Nootka Sound, on the west coast of Vancouver Island – not too far from where they live,”  says Marsha Lederma in the Globe and Mail.

“The assignment turned into a bigger article, then another, then a book proposal, then a documentary, Saving Luna.

Then it became The Whale, a second, “reworked documentary with a new title, new focus and two superstar executive producers: Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, who also narrates The Whale,” Marsha writes.

Parfit and Chisholm were the documentary’s directors.

This latest iteration is a highly emotional story describing the young orca’s desperate search for human companionship after he’s separated from his family pod.

It’s hard to tell if it’s is a tale  about hope,  or one of bureaucratic fumbling  and intransigence  which, ends in tragedy .

Luna was just two years old when he found himself on the West coast of Vancouver Island. But finally, Luna  “died as he had lived” alone and lonely, said the Seattle Post intelligencer,”  adding:

“One minute Luna was frolicking around the back of a boat, as he did routinely in an attempt to secure the companionship he craved.

“The next minute, he was sucked into a tube containing a propeller powered by a 1,700-horsepower engine.”
