Foxconn — in trouble for allegedly ‘soliciting bribes’

Fox Chinese electronics manufacturing plant Foxconn, also sometimes known as Apple’s China division, suicide central, and Hon Hai, is under pressure again.

But this time it isn’t because more of the company’s workers have killed themselves.

Only hours after  chairman Terry Gou promised better welfare for his workers, another Foxconn employee jumped to his death from a dorm building, said  the May, 2010, Business Insider story accompanying the picture above.

By mid-summer that year, 13 other workers had committed suicide.

Meanwhile, in a written statement, Hon Hai said its supply chain involving Taiwanese businesses in China, its personnel in China, and its business development are unaffected by the allegations of bribery, says the China Post

The statement said that based on Gou’s instructions, the company will not only try to find out who was involved and why the bribery occurred, but will also examine its internal practices to prevent the same thing from happening again.

Gou has “insisted that an alleged bribery case within the group be aggressively pursued, and he is cooperating with police on both sides of the Taiwan Strait on the case,” says the China Post going on:

“Taiwan’s Next Magazine reported recently that Lee was informed several months ago that executives on the group’s Surface Mount Technology (SMT) committee had allegedly solicited bribes from suppliers on a long-term basis.

“The informers reportedly attached suspicious accounting records to support their accusations, and Lee immediately reported the matter to Gou.”
